National automaker Proton has launched a new initiative aimed at improving road safety and encouraging the adoption of cleaner vehicles through its newly announced Proton Xchange Programme. Backed by a RM4.8 million allocation, the programme offers a RM2,000 incentive to owners who scrap their ageing, unroadworthy vehicles in exchange for a brand-new Proton.
A Push Toward Safer Roads and Greener VehiclesLaunched in May 2025, the Proton Xchange Programme aligns with the government’s environmental and road safety objectives by targeting vehicles that are 15 years or older and no longer economical to repair.
Under the initiative, eligible participants will receive RM2,000 in overtrade value, which can be applied toward the purchase of any current Proton model—including the newly introduced Proton e.MAS 7, the brand’s first mass-market electric vehicle.
“The Xchange Programme is more than just a discount—it’s Proton’s commitment to a safer, cleaner automotive future,” said Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton. “We are giving Malaysians the opportunity to transition into safer and more environmentally friendly vehicles.”
How It WorksTo qualify, vehicle owners must provide:
Proof of ownership of the old vehicle
A JPJK1KD form (to show the vehicle has been officially deregistered with JPJ)
A Certificate of Destruction (COD) issued by Car Medic Sdn Bhd, an authorised automotive treatment facility (AATF) approved by both the Department of Environment (DOE) and JPJ
Car Medic also offers e-Deregistration services, including door-to-door pickup, making the process accessible for urban and rural residents alike.
Eligible Proton ModelsThe RM2,000 incentive applies across the Proton lineup:
Proton Saga
Proton Persona
Proton Iriz
Proton X50
Proton X70
Proton X90
Proton S70
Proton e.MAS 7 EV
This broad inclusion ensures accessibility for various income levels and lifestyle needs—from entry-level sedans to electric SUVs.
Time-Limited OfferThe pilot phase of the Xchange Programme runs until 31 December 2025. Proton has allocated RM4.8 million to support this initiative, meaning only a limited number of applicants will benefit—on a first-come, first-served basis.
Industry Response and OutlookAutomotive analysts have praised the move, calling it a “step in the right direction” for transitioning Malaysians away from high-emission, low-safety vehicles. With rising fuel costs and growing awareness of climate change, such incentives could accelerate the country’s shift toward electrified transport.
